TB Joshua's Synagogue Tragedy: Local Businesses Grumble

It has not been business as usual in Ikotun-Egbe, Lagos, since the tragedy that befell the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN). It would be recalled that on September 12, 2014, a guesthouse collapsed in the church’s premises in Lagos, killing at least 115 people, 84 of them South Africans.

That prompted the former Lagos Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to order all church workers away from the scene in order to properly rescue trapped bodies. The government also claimed the church did not get government approval before construction.

The senior pastor of the church, Temitope Balogun Joshua, commonly referred to as T. B. Joshua, linked the tragedy to a strange aircraft “hovering” above the building shortly before it fell. As a result of the legal battles that ensued after the tragic event, life has not remained the same for the pastor.

Many observers were of the view that his absence was not unconnected with the devastating effect and mudslinging that has been associated with the church since September 12, last year.

Ikotun-Egbe, which used to be famous for T.B Joshua’s church has presently witnessed low movement of people to the area vertually every activity around the area has reduced. “This church was the centre of attraction and nothing more. Now that church services have reduced, activities around here have tunned down also” bemoaned Babatope Davies, who lives very close to the church.

Davis, who seemed to have a proper grasp of Ikotun-Egbe stressed further that he has been living in that place for about 30 years and witnessed the evolution of that environment. “I have lived here for about 30 years. I know how this place was before T.B Joshua built his church. The church brought about banks, hotels and filling stations. In short, it opened up this place.”

In the same vein, a woman in her mid- forties, who gave her name simply as Alhaja Mulikat, told New Telegraph that the place was like a sort of ‘Mecca’ when the church was functioning. “We are pleading with the government to leave T.B Joshua alone for the sake of Ikotun people. This place could be likened to a desert before TB Joshua built his church.

Ever since his church was built, this place became crowded with Nigerians and foreigners. It was like the whole world came here.”She said. “I’m a Muslim and I have no business going into that church but the truth is that lack of activities in that church is affecting businesses here.

We all are not happy with the tragedy because lives were lost and we also agree that no one is above the law but government needs to take into consideration how their action towards T.B Joshua is affecting lives negatively here. Why can’t this case be an exception?” she queried.

Business activities in other areas of Lagos could hardly match that of Ikotun-Egbe due to the presence of the church. The building is indeed an architectural masterpiece located in the heart of Ikotun-Egbe, the most visible in that area due to its towering image. A woman known as Madame Pat, who runs a popular restaurant, called ‘Feel Good’ Restaurant, told New Telegraph that she gets bored as a result of lack of customers.

“You can see my place is almost empty. Since morning, only two people have come to eat and this is 12 noon. By this time in the past, this place used to be filled up. Then, I raked home about N25,000 daily but now I can’t boast of N10,000 daily. I wouldn’t have had the chance to even speak with you like this because of customers. But now, I get bored. I want the government to understand our plight. Please we need T.B Joshua back.”

Miss Amaka, who runs a famous restaurant called Calabar kitchen, could not hide her disappointment as she told New Telegraph that she is thinking of relocating. “I don’t live around here. I come from Egbeda to do business here. I collected this shop to take advantage of the population here. But since last year, business had been terribly bad.

I don’t make profit like I used to. Very soon, I would have to pay for this space because it is a rented one. I am thinking of relocating to Egbeda if things don’t change for the better as soon as possible.”

A filling station opposite the SCOAN building is also affected by the problem of the church. A pump attendant who pleaded for anonymity was of the view that “the number of vehicles that come to fill their tanks have reduced drastically.

As you can see the place is virtually empty apart from the fuel scarcity.” Outside the filling station, a long queue of Tricycles, commonly known as ‘Keke Napep’ were packed waiting for passengers. New Telegraph learnt from one of the riders that unlike before, it now takes a lot of time for passengers to come by.

Musiliu said, “We do not get passengers like before. I was about sleeping before you came ask me questions. Since T.B Joshua’s problem, business has extremely been dull.” Kelvin Rufai Abiodun, a former manager of Ken Dallas Hotel and Suite said, “Foreigners used to stream enmasse to the hotel when things were good at the church.

It was like we were in a foreign land then because we used to trade in dollars most of the time. Although I have never left the shores of this country, I have had experience with many white people because of T.B Joshua’s church.”

He also said that, “Landlords were turning their houses into guest houses because it became a very lucrative business.” In Kaywy Lodge, a hotel along Segun Irefin Street, very close to SCOAN, customers are currently paying half-price.

According to Emmanuel Akagu, “the SCOAN is the number one tourism site in Nigeria. No other institution or environment attracts more foreigners than the SCOAN. Instead of the government to look into how to harness the enormous economic potential of the church, they only worry about re-election.”

Report On Nnamdi's Apology To Buhari Is A Lie – Kanu’s Brother

Prince Kanu, a brother to the director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has called the report on an apology rendered to the Nigerian president by his brother “a blatant lie”.

The Radio Biafra director, Nnamdi Kanu

In his exclusive comment to Naij.com, Prince said the report is an attempt to call bluff all effort to get justice for his brother.

“That is blatant lie, when and how? Where did the person see him to get the apology from?” Prince wondered.

He added that the articled as published by Punch is an attempt to sell their newspaper.

“I will put it as Punch’s propaganda, a Lagos-Ibadan expressway propaganda to sell their papers,” he said.

The brother of the embattled Radio Biafra boss also noted that report on his brother’s apology was weird.

“It is a very strange, a weird report, because I have been in communication with my brother (Nnamdi Kanu) and as far as I am concerned he did not grant any interview to anybody and never made a statement apologizing to anybody.

“So, only God knows where the junk is coming from,” Prince said.

Kanu’s lawyer Vincent Obetta has also debunked claims that his client made such confessions.

He said the report was a propaganda by the Nigerian government, an indication that the government was trying everything possible to destroy Kanu’s defence.

The apology, the Punch reported, was contained in a statement which the 48-year-old pro-Biafra agitator made available to the DSS on October 23.

In the report, Kanu was said to have apologized to President Muhammadu Buhari for calling him ‘a pedophile’ among other things.

After being granted bail by a magistrate court and, subsequently, by a federal high court, Kanu is currently being detained by the State Security Service (SSS) over allegations of managing an unlawful society, unlawful possession of firearms and assisting in the management of unlawful society, all punishable under Section 27 (b) (1) of the Firearms Act CAP F28 and Section 63 of the Criminal Code Act, CAP C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.

Baby Survives Fall From A Moving Train (Photo)

The baby girl that reportedly survived the fall from a moving train toilet

The Times of India reports that a pregnant woman on board 52204 Tankapur Izzat Nagar train at Bhojipura railway station went into sudden child labour and eventually gave birth to a baby girl inside the train’s toilet.

It was said that the new born baby slipped and fell on the tracks from the moving train, but survived the fall. The baby was quickly rushed to local hospital for medical attention.

Other passengers on board the train heard her crying for help and rush to her while the locomotive moves on. Getting to her, they discovered her bleeding seriously, while she kept telling them to stop the train. Some of the passengers reportedly pulled the alarm chain and the train stopped. Some of the passengers discovered the baby and found out that she was still alive.

The baby and her mother were quickly taken to a close primary health centre (PHC) after the Government Railway Police (GRP) was informed of what happened. The victims are said to be receiving treatment from a team of doctors, including PHC in charge Dr Saurabh Singh.

It was gathered that the baby’s mother Pushpa Devi, is a resident of Mohan Nagar Bhagatpur of Kanchanpur district in Nepal. According to her, she was on her way to Bareilly for an eye check-up when she suddenly went into labour.

The lucky mother said she supports herself by doing odd jobs in the neighbourhood since her husband deserted her.

The health centre was reportedly crowded as local residents made frantic effort to see the “miracle baby,” with some expressing desire to adopt her.

Reacting to the incident, Chandra Mohan Jindal, TOI, divisional railway manager, Izzat Nagar division said: “It is a miracle that the newborn girl, after falling on concrete boulders of the track from such a height, survived. The GRP and fellow passengers did a commendable job by immediately rushing both the mother and the child to hospital.”

In a related development, since there is indeed miracle as experienced by this new born bay, a 43-year-old man named Kanai Das, was born with a rare genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis which has severely disfigured his face, making him look like the elephant God known as Lord Ganesha is also praying for miracle to return to normal.

Mistakes to Avoid When You First Start Dating

So, how do you make sure you maintain this ‘new love’ bliss as long as you can? Read on for tips.
1. Don’t make big plans too soon: Do not automatically begin discussing the future, money, kids, and other big plans as soon as you start dating someone. Give yourself time to have fun, and when the time is right, this discussion will come up. If you bring the topic up too early, you risk scaring your partner and making him/her feel pressured. This affects how relaxed they will be around you.

2. Being dishonest: Dating is a time when two people size each other up and come to a decision whether or not they can stay with each other for real. If you want your partner to see you as someone they can be with for a long time, you need to be honest with them. Being caught in a lie will instantly ruin this dating period. Besides, if they cannot handle the truth, the early dating period is the best time for them to leave, since you will find it easier to move on too.

3. Not being you: Dating is a chance to have a good time with someone who takes you for who you are. Avoid the temptation of changing yourself just to impress your partner, especially if you feel intimidated by them. If you do not like her hangout spots or his favourite sport, speak up and don’t pretend you do. These little differences will not break your relationship, but being fake will.

4. Expecting too much: Nobody is perfect. Do not instantly expect someone you just met to provide all you needs, emotionally and otherwise. Give yourself a chance to see what they have to offer, and decide if you are okay with it. Do not instantly expect them to begin fulfilling your needs.

5. Introducing third party: The early dating period should be all about you getting to know your partner without external influences. It is inevitable that the longer you date, the more people become interested in your relationship, and sometimes, this might not be a good thing. So, enjoy this period when it is just the two of you, as long as you can.

6. Introducing sex: Introducing sex too early in the relationship could cloud your judgment. You might begin to think someone is right for you simply because the sex is good, and this might cause you to make a big mistake. Instead, give yourselves time to get to know each other, and when it becomes clear that the relationship is real, sex can then be introduced.

7. Letting fear rule: Do not let fear rule this dating period. Some people are plagued by the fear of abandonment, of being alone, of rejection or of getting hurt and this can cause them to hold on to something that is not real or let go of a good potential. No one knows the future, but attempt open your heart to enjoy the present without destroying things simply because you are afraid.

See The Message Nigerian Footballer's Wife "Ideye" Has For The Lady Claiming To Have A Child For Her Boo

Popular Nigerian footballer's wife "Brown Ideye', decided to send a message to a lady claiming to have kids for her husband. The lady have being laying claims via her instagram handle @alex_jm99 that she has two kids with the super eagles player and that he has abandoned her and her kids. She have being attacking Ideye via instagram in the past few weeks. So, Mrs. Ideye decided to send a message to her via her instagram handle @damkaideye. See the message she posted Below:

Dear All, my attention was drawn to this account on IG,which has for the last few weeks been used for the single purpose of discrediting  me and my family. The acct claims my husband has 2 children  he fathered in Kiev,Ukraine. It claims the boy is 3 years old and alleges 'my husband hasn't come to see him' hence, the campaign. Then goes on to claim they have a girl together who just turned 1 on Dec 20th,2015, which apparently also,he's yet to 'see'Hmmmm..💭 If there is a legitimate claim,am sure this beautiful, educated, social media savvy person, would have long taken a legal approach...I share this because perhaps they will also attempt to contact some of our good friends to further whatever agenda they have, also, because I've spent a good part of my adult life so far, advocating for people's rights and educating my peers, and younger people to never stay SILENT in the face of any form of bullying or harassment and therefore will not shy away from doing same for myself. Where there are blessings, there are also curses lingering to weave their way in, if you allow it. The hate is real people(even from those you don't know)but so is the LOVE❤️and that is where I choose to focus. My only prayer and wish for he/she/they is that, they "find some peace of mind" as we all prepare to usher in a wonderful new year in a few days.

HIV Breakthrough! Spain Finds Functional Cure For HIV Virus (Confirmed)

Doctors in Barcelona, Spain believe they have found the cure to HIV – the AIDS-causing virus that affects the lives of more than 34 million people worldwide, according to WHO.

By using blood transplants from the umbilical cords of individuals with a genetic resistance to HIV, Spanish medical professionals believe they can treat the virus, having proven the procedure successful with one patient.

Doctors in Barcelona initially attempted the technique using the precedent of Timothy Brown, an HIV patient who developed leukemia before receiving experimental treatment in Berlin, the Spanish news site The Local reported.

Brown was given bone marrow from a donor who carried the resistance mutation from HIV. After the cancer treatment, the HIV virus had also disappeared.

“We suggested a transplant of blood from an umbilical cord but from someone who had the mutation because we knew from ‘the Berlin patient’ that as well as [ending] the cancer, we could also eradicate HIV,” Rafael Duarte, the director of the Haematopoietic Transplant Programme at the Catalan Oncology Institute in Barcelona, told The Local.

Eleven days after the transplant, the patient in Barcelona experienced recovery. Three months later, it was found that he was clear of the HIV virus.

Despite the unfortunate death of the patient from cancer, the procedure has led to the development of an ambitious project that is backed by Spain’s National Transplant Organization.

SURVIVOR: Man Narrates How He Escaped Boko Haram Attack

Bukar Idris, one of the survivors of Boko Haram attack near a mosque in Silimanti on the outskirts of Maiduguri, Borno state, on December 27, narrated his ordeal.

NAN reports that Idris narrowly escaped the death in the bombing that killed 25 people.

However, his two childhood friends were not so lucky and the man is now mourning the sore loss caused by Boko Haram members.

The survivor, who is a resident of Silimanti, said: “I was lucky to have escaped the attack because I left the place few minutes to fetch something in my house for a friend at the gathering.”

Idris said he counted at least 20 corps before aid workers came to the scene.

“I lost two childhood friends,” the man said, giving their names as Modu Bushara and Shehu Sawab.

The Nigerian military confirmed that 25 Nigerians were killed and 85 others wounded in Sunday’s deadly attacks when three of 14 female suicide attackers who tried to storm Maiduguri blew themselves off.

Yushau Abubakar, a major-general and theatre commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, said that three of the suicide bombers detonated their improvised explosive devices in their bodies.

According to him the insurgents planned to carry out massive and coordinated suicide bombings through Asmari, Damboa checkpoint, Ali Dawari, Molai Kura, Baderi, Jumari villages on the outskirt of Maidugri.

Abubakar said: “Seven other suicide bombers were gunned down by our troops, three escaped and one was arrested.

“I believe this development has averted what would have been a major disaster if they had gained entrance into Maiduguri.

“One of the girls went to a nearby house and requested for water to perform ablution but instead prepared herself and came to a nearby mosque and blew herself off killing one person while 13 others sustained injuries.”

The recent violence came days after President Muhammadu Buhari announced that Nigeria had “technically won the war” against the group, which he said was no longer capable of mounting “conventional attacks.”

GH Cop Killers Arrested

The police said the culprits were arrested upon a tip-off at their hideout at Goaso in the Brong Ahafo region. The police also retrieved a Toyota car with registration number GT 8086-10, which was said to have been stolen from the owner at Ashiaman.

The police said about a month ago, a police constable (name withheld) was killed at Kasoa in the Central region during a shootout with five armed robbers.

One of the armed robbers also died in the process while two were arrested.

The suspects would be transferred to the Central region by the police to face prosecution.

Buhari Under Fire For Poor Provision For South-East (2016 Budget)

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has criticized the federal government for poor provision made for the South-East in the 2016 budget proposed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Today.ng reports that the group expressed its dissatisfaction in a statement made on Monday, December 28, and signed by its secretary-general, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, and the forum chairman in the seven Ohanaeze states, Mazi Alex Okemiri.

Wondering why the federal government voted billions of Naira to the North-East, the OYC accused the government of deliberately marginalizing the South-East.

“The South-East is supposed to be declared a disaster zone going by long years of neglect. Nothing short of the scheme for Niger Delta Youths and militants and creation of the Ministry of South East Affairs will assuage the feelings of the suffering Igbo youths who are the worst treated in the country,” the statement read in part.

The OYC also warned the Nigerian army not to repeat the alleged provocative killings it carried out at Onitsha and called on the military High Command “to fish out the soldiers that used life bullet on unarmed protesters, else we will write officially to the international Criminal Court over the matter”.

Members of the group wondered how could the army use life bullet instead of rubber and tear gas on unarmed protesters.

The council urged the security agents to arrest some people they described as impostors, who “have been going about claiming to be presidents of the council and extorting money from members of the unsuspecting public, and planning violent attack on the South-East states”.

The OYC highlighted that the Youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is currently under the leadership of Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has recently explained how the federal government will source for funds to run the N6trillion budget for next year.

Buhari assured Nigerians that in spite of the fall in the international price of crude oil, measures taken to block leakages in the nation’s revenue generating agencies would ensure enough cash to fund the budget.

Wisa Apologises For Showing His Penis On Stage

Wisa who showed his manhood during his performance at the 2015 “December 2 Rememba” concert, organized by Citi FM, has rendered an apology to the public and organizers for his act.
His apology below.

Wisa Greid (Eugene Ashie)
BBK Entertainment (Management),
25 December 2015,
PRESS STATEMENT

I fully understand the outrage that will greet this statement. And I want to begin by saying I am really, truly sorry.

In the early hours of Friday, December 25, I performed at the December 2 Remember Concert, organized by Citi FM. It was really my first big career live stage performance and the crowd had been amazing in the way they received me.

Then, I did something disappointing. I showed my genitals while performing.

I cannot explain this rash and irresponsible behaviour, but I have been trained to acknowledge my fault and be responsible for my actions. That is why I want to accept every bit of criticism that has come my way in the ensuing hours.

I have disappointed myself, my family, my hard-working management team, Citi FM and the audience, who paid hard-earned money to be entertained but instead went away feeling anything but entertained.
Most importantly, I disappointed my God. I am exceedingly sorry for what I have done.

I acknowledge the statement issued earlier from the Office of Hiplife and Hiphop at the Musician Union of Ghana and will avail myself to all planned disciplinary actions in the coming week.

There are no words to describe how I feel about what I did. I hope the public as a whole and all industry stakeholders will find a place in their hearts to forgive me.
Thank you ver much.

Pastor Allegedly Marries Corpse Of Church Member He Impregnated In Akwa Ibom

A certain pastor, Augustine Mendie, in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, who reportedly impregnated his church member and tried to procure abortion for her, has been allegedly made to marry her corpse.

According to reports, Mendie, the General Overseer of an unidentified Pentecostal church in the area, is married with children.

Reports allege that the man of God is a ‘randy one who sleeps with many ladies in his church, both married and single till he got his fingers burnt.’

The unnamed lady, reports further claimed, was the praise and worship leader of the church but also the pastor’s secret lover. No one in the church knew what was going on between them until the lady took in and informed the pastor.

The pastor, who allegedly did not want to take responsibility, decided to procure an abortion for her. The lady who had earlier confided in her friend about the development lost her life in the process of the abortion.

As the story goes, trouble struck when the said friend reportedly told the family of the deceased that the pastor was responsible.

Reports further alleged that the pastor initially tried to deny responsibility but after he was threatened with the community’s deity, he agreed that he was actually the one responsible and as such, ready to appease the gods. He was allegedly made to marry the corpse of the woman as tradition demands.

All Those Indicted In Dasuki Arms Deal Scandal Will Be Jailed - Buhari

President Buhari says those who are found guilty in the $2.1 billion arms deal fraud will be sent to jail. He said this in a recent interview with BBC Hausa

Quote
“Remember during the campaigns, we said Nigeria is facing three things and nobody disputed that assertion. Firstly, there was widespread insecurity, a war in the north-east, while the country’s oil was being stolen at random in the south; secondly, there is massive unemployment.
Thirdly, bribery and corruption was basically suffocating the country. If we don’t kill these monsters, this country would go down. That is why those who stole monies meant for arms procurement and shared it among themselves are being arrested and are being shown documents so that they would be asked to refund the money or face prosecution. We would use those documents to prove what they stole, collect all the assets acquired from the proceeds and then jail them”

Buhari also spoke on the mutiny of soldiers during the last administration

Quote
“I want people to understand that after I settled down and got a good grasp of what the country was going through, we removed all the service chiefs and appointed new ones. We also undertook an investigation and found out how the monies meant for arms procurement were diverted and shared by officials in the last administration. They sent the boys to the warfront without arms and ammunition, leading some of them to mutiny after which they were arrested and detained. We have been able to raise money and fund the war. Go and ask the people of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, how many of their local governments were under the control of insurgents? And how many are currently still under the insurgents. Maybe we would not win the war completely by the end of the month, but the insurgents have now resorted to putting on explosive vests on young children, mostly girls aged 15 and below and then sending them to markets, mosques and churches to detonate. Boko Haram itself knows that the era of them taking over communities and local governments is over. If people would be fair to us, they would know that the Nigerian Army has basically met the deadline and are winning the war. You cannot find any significant number of Boko Haram members in Adamawa and Yobe, only maybe in about three local governments of Borno, in the area around our borders with Chad Republic. They are not in a position to threaten Nigeria now, so we have won.

Are you sold on the fake notion that owning possessions is the touchstone of your self-worth? Have you felt jealous and self-pity when a neighbor bought a new Mercedes or a new Yacht that you always wanted to possess? We all have.
If your paycheck is not keeping up the pace with your cravings for the new iphone, why not learn the secrets of simplicity from the richest man on the earth who still lives without a cell phone? Before you sink your money for the latest gadget what if you were to know that the Oracle of Omaha still has no desk computer in his modest office?
In this world full of the rich and famous, Warren Buffett remains the greatest investor ever born not due to his acumen for the wise investments that he has made during his life but more for exemplifying the greatness with simplicity. He’s full of wit and happiness and this is at the core of everything that he does.

Secret # 1 : Happiness comes from within.

In my adult business life I have never had to make a choice of trading between professional and personal. I tap-dance to work, and when I get there it’s tremendous fun.- Warren Buffett

This is the man who truly does what he loves. The battle between Productivity and anti-productivity blogs stems from their convoluted chains of frequently twisted rational to substantiate their claim that productivity is a force of an external demand – from an employer or a competitor. In reality, productivity comes from within. It comes from doing what we love and loving what we do. When we start trading time between our professional and personal life, we wage war in our own mind to justify our passion in terms of a personal benefit. In my business I have felt more stress and angst when I haven’t given all of my talent, hard work and passion to help others on a given day. The myth of working hard to make more money to buy more things throws us in the vicious circle of hallucination. Our happiness always remains imprisoned when we do work that we abhor yet justify doing it to pay bills for those things that we don’t need. I used to work even after buying my first hotel for many years to justify the fake notion that I needed additional income to pay bills. What I needed was to change my lifestyle to free myself from this never-ending rut chase.

Secret # 2 Find happiness in simple pleasures.

I have simple pleasures. I play bridge online for 12 hours a week. Bill and I play, he’s “chalengr” and I’m “tbone”. – Warren Buffett

If the man richer than God can find happiness in the simple pleasure of playing bridge online with another billionaire, I have to learn to be happy with the simple pleasures of playing cards with friends or playing with my children or taking a walk in the wilderness. All of these simple pleasures do not need extravagant spending. I used to go play golf with other businessmen when the local chamber of commerce sponsored an event. I never found happiness in those events as they were centered on generating more business and exchanging business cards than on truly enjoying the moment. I was allowing myself to be run ragged by trading business cards after hours in a vain hope of making more money whereas that time deserved a dinner with my family.

Secret # 3 Live a simple life.

I just naturally want to do things that make sense. In my personal life too, I don’t care what other rich people are doing. I don’t want a 405 foot boat just because someone else has a 400 foot boat. – Warren Buffett

The sad truth is that our ever-sophisticated advertising industry has conditioned our mind to find happiness from consumption by spending our hard earned money on the possessions that never bring us lasting happiness. We spend our life-energy on those possessions that we seldom use. We worry about making payments for a luxury car that sits in our garage collecting dust only for the right to brag about it in an occasional social gathering. Keeping up with the Joneses is the worst epidemic among those who should never contemplate that notion in the first place. If a man who can possibly buy a nation with his cash never espouses the mantra of “more the better”, I need to learn not to spread my legs beyond the reach of the blanket. We are conditioned to spend money before we earn it. We are sold on the fake happiness of “Buy now, pay later dearly” - It’s nothing more than buying possessions that we cannot afford. I have my share of insanity when it comes to mindless spending, but lately I try to pay for most of my purchases with cash. It creates awareness towards the impulse buy when I pay by cash. I have also started red lining items on the credit card statement that I consider useless spending. All of these efforts have built my awareness towards my impulse purchases. I have been using mantra of – “less is more” to simplify every aspect of my life. It’s a work in progress but the results are astounding.

Secret # 4 Think Simply.

“I want to be able to explain my mistakes. This means I do only the things I completely understand.” – Warren Buffett

There lies one of the greatest secrets of simplicity. Warren Buffett invests only in the businesses that he understands. If you ever read research reports from an accomplished Wall Street guru, you’ll find a plethora of details that make you dizzy. The success of Warren Buffett as the greatest investor ever lies in his ability to think simply.

I used to invest in the stock market in the mid 90’s when everyone wanted to make over night millions in an exuberant market. I used to read “Investor’s Business Daily” only to look at the movers and shakers. These were the stocks that made a significant upward move a day before. A few days before Christmas, I made $52,000 in one stock in a matter of a few days. I knew nothing about the company. I created a new reality for my thoughts that I had figured out how the Wall Street works. I was on my way to the riches. I applied the same thought model on the next several stocks. Needless to say, I lost all that I made and much more. I was lacking in a basic human quality that Warren Buffett has mastered well – common sense. It says a great deal about the character of a man who invested a measly amount in Microsoft despite the fact that Bill Gates is one of his closest friends. I learned a valuable lesson of life from this experience – “Not losing hard earned money is far more important than making more money”.

If I apply this rule in my life, I can develop clarity and sanity in my thoughts. Clarity is the mother of simplicity. Life is not a roulette; life is about simple yet profound choices.

Secret # 5 Invest Simply.

The best way to own common stocks is through an index fund. – Warren Buffett

It is astounding to know that the greatest investor in the world is not bragging about intricate financial maneuvering to impress the rest of the world with his financial genius. Instead, Warren Buffett shows us the most simplistic approach to our financial freedom – “Flow with the market rather than pretending to be smarter than God.”

In this world full of so-called financial experts, Warren stands tall by showing us the simplest way to the riches. The stock market has moved upward for the last hundred years despite numerous setbacks. He is using a long historical view to back his argument rather than making a futile effort to predict how we can make a quick fortune. After losing most of my capital in the late 90’s, I have precisely followed the simple advice of investing in the no-load index funds. I’m happier than ever and while my assets have not skyrocketed, they haven’t dwindled either.

Secret # 6 Have a mentor in life.

I was lucky to have the right heroes. Tell me who your heroes are and I’ll tell you how you’ll turn out to be. The qualities of the one you admire are the traits that you, with a little practice, can make your own, and that, if practiced, will become habit-forming. – Warren Buffett

We are worshipers of celebrity demi-gods. All of us have this acute desire to look and live like these celebrities. However, are they truly the ones with character and moral compass to lead us? Having a mentor is as important as having a purpose in our life but having a wrong mentor is as devastating as having a wrong purpose in our life. The mentor has to be someone whom we can trust and have an unwavering faith in his/her guidance. The mentor has to be the one who has made outstanding strides in advancing the greater and guiding purpose of happiness in his/her own life. You’ll find that person in your inner circle if you think hard enough. Write down why you admire them. Try to emulate their traits and as Warren has shown by his exemplary life, with a little practice, you can form a habit to clone the life that you admire the most.

Secret # 7 Making money isn’t the backbone of our guiding purpose; making money is the by-product of our guiding purpose.

If you’re doing something you love, you’re more likely to put your all into it, and that generally equates to making money. – Warren Buffett

How do you rationalize the richest man on the earth still living in a small 3-bedroom house that he purchased fifty years ago? Warren Buffett never travels in a private jet despite the fact that he owns the largest private jet company. His character and way of life speak volume about his greatness. This is the man who spent his personal time investigating a $4 line item on his tax return to hunt down the specifics of it while giving away billions of dollars to Bill Gates foundation. It is rare to find the richest man on the earth living without luxuries that we want to possess even by mortgaging our future. He has demonstrated that while valuing the worth of money is vital for our ingenuity and success, money shall never become the object and end all of our motivation.

I’m an avid admirer of simplicity, but I’m an even bigger fan of the man who has mastered the greatness by living and breathing simplicity amid an ocean of wealth. Do you agree?
